The Court of Justice of the European Union: the engine of integration?

This thesis deals with the topic of influence of the Court of Justice of the European Union on the process of European integration. For this purpose, the thesis asks the following question: "How has the Court of Justice of the European Union in selected cases contributed to the strengthening of European integration?" After an overview of the methodological basis, the thesis thoroughly examines the main theoretical approaches and authors that focused on the topic of Court of Justice and its influence on European integration: neofunctionalism, intergovernmentalism, neorationalism, supranationalism and legalistic approach. In the third part, five landmark cases of the ECJ have been chosen for detailed analysis: Van Gend en Loos, Costa vs. E.N.E.L., Internationale Handelsgesellschaft, Les Verts and Francovich. The thesis not only maps the political situation surrounding their announcement, but also the aftermath, consequences and reactions of member states to the judgements. In its last part, the thesis attempts to connect the theoretical approaches with the findings of the aforementioned analysis of landmark decisions. Intergovernmental Cooperation in Resolving the Eurozone Crisis

This bachelor thesis focuses on the topic of the Euro crisis intending to identify crisis- solving strategies. It considers the period between 2010 and 2012 during which several key measures were taken and new institutions were established to provide financial assistance to the Eurozone Member States. The work analyses the nature of these institutions and the decisions taken. The intention is to determine whether the steps that led to the protection of the Eurozone were predominantly intergovernmental-driven or whether the main drivers of the processes were supranational institutions. The introductory chapters explain the causes of the crisis, its institutional framework and highlight several views on solving the crisis as presented in the research of other authors. Furthermore, they introduce the theoretical-analytical framework based on the theories of intergovernmentalism, respectively liberal intergovernmentalism and neofunctionalism. The analytical part of the work, first, specifies the research methodology. Then, the discussion presents the findings of the research and confronts them with the research of other authors who analyzed this issue. The conclusion summarizes the work and draws on the results of the analysis to answer the research question that is defined in the introduction.

East African Community and Theories of Regional Integration

This paper presents a case study of a regional integration called East African Community (EAC) that associates Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda later joined Rwanda and Burundi. The main research question is the reason for creation of the EAC. Congruence method is used to answer this question with further investigation to confirm existence of the causal relationship. There are three theories used to formulate a hypothesis concerning formation of the EAC - neofunctionalism, realism and liberal theory of international relation in the form reformulated by Andrew Moravcsik. Neofunctionalism cannot explain emergence of the EAC as strong supranational actor, key neofunctionalists feature, is not present. Spillover process also does not occur. Realism also fails to provide an explanation, although the end of the Cold War brings shift in global power structure. East Africa is also endangered by economic marginalization caused by integration of other parts of the continent. However intrastate and regional political instability and security threats were more important at that time. The EAC also does not correspond with the notion of only low politics integration. (Theoretical reflection of Iceland's integration to the European Union: neofuctionalism and liberal intergovernmentalism)

Thesis Theoretical reflection Iceland integration into the European Union: neofunctionalism and liberal intergovernmentalism discusses integration of Iceland into the European Union, and tryi to analyze this case in the context of two theoretical approaches, neofunctionalism and liberal intergovernmentalism. Since the creation of an independent state in 1944, Iceland held traditionally isolationist and Euro-skeptic stance. In 1970 he became member of the European Free Trade Association. Gradually relationships has intensifyied and deepend with participation in the European Economic Area and the Schengen Convention. After the economic crisis in 2008, which hit in Iceland with unusual power because of risky actions of local banks, the newly elected government decided to make a historic step and apply for membership in the European Union. The first part of the thesis is an analysis of foreign policy and the position of Iceland in international relations. Subsequently thesis explores the integration of Iceland from the perspective of three different actors, Iceland, European Union member States and the European Union, first from a theoretical point of view following with empirical level. Based on the findings should be made to confirm the theoretical starting points of one of the two selected directions.

Czech-German Economic Ties: The Relevance of the Neofunctionalist Approach in the Contemporary Socio-Economic Context

The thesis was most importantly concerned with the intensity of economic ties between the Czech Republic and Germany from 2004 enlargement, using neofunctionalist approach framework as a theoretical background. Two main hypotheses have been tested and the effects of financial and economic crisis have been also taken into account. We can affirm, based on the observed data and analysis made, that the intensity of economic ties has grown substantially since 2004 as well as the synchronization of the business cycles. Much of these effects could be attributed to the practical working of neofunctionalist premises. This is demonstrated by the fact the EU integration leads to a more significant interconnection in many spheres of economic activity that in turn affect the whole economic development and determination. Economic reciprocity has in general strengthened the political one, which is now being perceived on quite many political levels. However, more or less exogenous effects of the financial and economic crisis of 2008 and 2009 have led to a relatively visible slowdown in further integration and interconnection. Great Britain and the Common Security and Defence Policy of the EU: A neofunctionalist and liberal intergovernmentalist approach

Velká Británie a společná bezpečnostní a obranná politika EU: Neofunkcionalistický a liberálně mezivládní přístup Abstract Tomáš Pfeifer In December 1998, a significant conference of British and French government officials assembled in the town of St. Malo in France. Their diplomatic efforts resulted in a joint declaration which is commonly regarded as the beginning of the current phase of European cooperation in the field of security and defence policy. In a few months' time, the fundamental architecture of the future European security and defence policy was plotted out, and shortly afterwards, Javier Solana was presented as its new head. It was an remarkable detour from the decades-long period of Cold War stagnation during which European cooperation was carried out mostly by the Western European Union and other more or less formal institutions. This work analyses the problem of joint European security from the viewpoint of the United Kingdom, which is not only one of the ESDP inititators, but also a dominant European military player with a rich and complex foreign policy history and, consequently, a finely structured system of needs and preferences.
